Good ol' Powerpoint work

I spent time tonight putting together my portion of the powerpoint. I spent a lot of time on it and did a lot of research to look behind the framing of the cartoon. I searched out the facts that the editorials are based on and found it is mostly based on truth or sarcasm of the truth. Pretty interesting stuff! I am now working on the editorial cartoon that we are turning in for the project...hoping it turns out well!!!

Housekeeping things!

Alright boys, don't forget that tomorrow we are meeting in library room 145 at 2:00 to present to Dr. Cooper.

Also- don't forget to print out peer evaluations and have them ready to be turned in at the beginning of class tomorrow.

Finally, please make sure everything you want to be on the blog is there. Meaning, all forms of journal entries so Dr. Cooper knows who has worked on the project and how much, etc. So if it isn't there, please update the blog for your information. We've all done a great job of sharing the weight and I want everyone's grade to reflect that.

Bishop Eddie Long final

So I worked for over 3 hours on my part of the power point which deals with Bishop Eddie Long. I started by getting pictures of him which I found on google images. Then I decided I wanted to have some background information on him just so everyone knew who he was. I found this on his Biography section of www.newbirth.org (the church website) I then search for articles about the scandal, and found three really good ones that I used as the basis of my presentation. The articles can be found at:
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/09/22/Bishop.long.sex.lawsuit/index.html?iref=obinsite
http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/10/28/bishop.long/index.html?iref=allsearch
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130370393

These articles then led me to video clips found on youtube and cnn.com- all of which you will see in the presentation. My section might be a little long but I was finding some really good information that dealt with the theme we chose to go with (same-sex marriage in the Christian church)

I found this really good clip, that Steve might even be able to use, although I did add it at the end of my presentation as well. CNN interviews a black pastor who changed his stance on same-sex marriage. He used to be opposed to it (because that is what the church said) and is now for same-sex marriage. He talks about the struggles he has faced and the beliefs behind the Black Church's stance on only homosexual marriage. You can find the clip here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl-Hpro8-8s

Those are just a few of the clips, and news articles I used. I sent my project to Steve so he can put them all together for our presentation tomorrow.

Braden and I both have time tomorrow before the presentation so we are going to meet to go over any last details that need to be discussed. Steve- if you have time, we are meeting at 1 in the library. If not, then we will see you at 2 in room 145 to present to Dr. Cooper.

Nice work on all of this guys!

Group Meeting 10/28/2010

Steve, Braden and I met Thursday in library room 143 from 4:30-6:00 to discuss our project. We started out by going over the coding sheets I had done prior to the group meeting, just to make sure everyone agreed. We then told Steve about our idea for our editorial cartoon and Braden showed us a sketch he had done for it. We talked about what we liked and what to change and ended up with what we think will be a great cartoon. Finally, we discussed the way we are going to do the powerpoint project. Each of us is going to take the cartoons I had assigned earlier in the week, research them and do the slides for them. We then are going to email our slides to Steve and he is going to make sure everything looks good and put the pieces together to make the final slide show.

Editorial cartoon background research...

The 3rd cartoon is a satirical take on the recent comments made by Mormon Apostle President Packer. In the most recent General Conference the LDS church holds twice a year, President Packer was quoted saying, "Some suppose that they were preset and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn temptations toward the impure and unnatural. Not so! Paul promised that “God … will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”14 You can, if you will, break the habits and conquer an addiction and come away from that which is not worthy of any member of the Church...There are those today who not only tolerate but advocate voting to change laws that would legalize immorality, as if a vote would somehow alter the designs of God’s laws and nature. A law against nature would be impossible to enforce."

The cartoon is playing off the comments made and by illustrating it with a political "Obama-like" advertisement thinking by using this type of marketing might help those disagreeing with President Packer's words to change, agree, or simplistically understand the message. The LDS church believes those with homosexual tendencies have the ability and capacity to "change." But do they? That has been the argument that many, even within the LDS church, have been fighting over for the past while. Contention and frustrations have built up within churches and many Christians are turning against other Christians in the fight to understand if homosexuality and gay marriage truly is something to overcome or something to be embraced.

The 4th cartoon is poking the California ruling of gay marriage. As we all know the issue of gay marriage in California has been quite the hot button issue for the past couple of years. It was once accepted, then voted against, and now has the possibility of being overturned. The LA Times reported on August 5th 2010, "A federal judge declared California's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional Wednesday, saying that no legitimate state interest justified treating gay and lesbian couples differently from others and that "moral disapproval" was not enough to save the voter-passed Proposition 8....The jurist, a Republican appointee, cited extensive evidence from the trial to support his finding that there was not a rational basis for excluding gays and lesbians from marriage." Many believe gay marriage is immoral. Many believe that it underminds what has 'always been done.' There are many who believe that by accepting/allowing same sex marriage it might threaten or take away the sanctity of the institution of marriage. Whatever the argument is, it is alive and kicking. And this article takes a humorous stab at some of the arguments.

"Gay weddings take forever"

The cartoon which says "Gay weddings take forever" is talking about how long it is taking for the legalization of gay marriage. In 2004, George W. Bush spoke to Congress and argued for an amendment to the constitution to say the only legal marriages were between a man and woman (http://socialissues.wiseto.com/Articles/FO3020640010/) which started a series of debates to determine whether or not same-sex marriages should be allowed and whether or not the government can have a say in the matter. Six years later, only 5 states allow same-sex marriage.

Bishop Eddie Long

I did some research on the cartoon of Bishop Eddie Long and it turns out he is a pastor of an Atlanta Megachurch who allegedly lured 4 boys into sexual relations with him. He is also an anti-gay activist. So the cartoon with him in it is showing the hypocrisy of the situation. He's against homosexuals, yet had sexual relations with 4 boys. This also plays into our religion theme- he's Christian.

Ideas for Editorial Cartoon...

I spent a couple of hours the last two days doing rough sketches and sorting through possible ideas on what I could possibly do for the group editorial cartoon. I came up with a few ideas as I looked through various American history art pieces. I wanted to incorporate something to do with the history of what America used to be, and intends to be for all of its citizens. As Laura mentioned in the last post, as she and I met together we threw back and forth various ideas of what could be done and figured out some possible ideas to incorporate into the cartoon. Even though this is just an enhancement for our project we are stoked on it!

Laura & Braden Meeting

Braden and I met in the library for 2 hours today and discussed what we should do for the multi-media project and the editorial cartoon. Braden had come with the idea to base the cartoon off this:

but obviously dealing with same-sex marriage. After talking about different possibilities, I feel like we came up with a really good idea for the final cartoon. (Steve we'll tell you during our group meeting tomorrow). We talked about different ways to incorporate the cartoons we felt are most important for our project. I'm really excited for how this is going to turn out. I think Braden is going to do a great job with it.

Since our original idea for the multi-media project isn't going to work, Braden and I started discussing other ways to present the final project. What we decided was to pick 4 or 5 of the strongest cartoons we have and do heavy research on those and then put the findings into a powerpoint.

The cartoons we felt were strongest were:

The last one is a possibility. We have to do some extra research on it to decide if it would work well with our powerpoint.

As far as the heavy research: we're thinking to do the background research on the cartoon and see how the pertains to what is being said and what is actually true about the cartoon (again think truth vs truthiness). Some ideas I had for the cartoons include:
The religious ones (especially the first one): Look up the fight between different Christian sects pertaining to same-sex marriage. Go onto the church websites and look for the doctrinal belief on same sex marriage. Then look up any news articles you might find pertaining to this topic. And also look up on Colbertnation.com and thedailyshow.com and any other news sources to see what clips you can find.

By doing this with all the cartoons I think we will get a wide arrange of information about how media portrays same-sex marriage through cartoons and news articles.

For Thursday's meeting:
Steve: would it be alright if you research the first cartoon?
Laura: research the second and last cartoons
Braden: the 3rd and 4th cartoons (we kinda talked about the 4th one so you have an idea where to go with it)

I think Steve's will require more work than the others, that is why he only has one.

Come prepared with url's and ideas, in fact, put your findings as a new post on the blog so that way it will count as a "journal entry" and we'll all know where to find it and be able to access it easily during the meeting tomorrow when we start to put the powerpoint together. I'll also come prepared tomorrow with the cartoons on pages and in the binder and we'll quickly go over the coding sheets before we put those in the binder.

Sorry, I know this was a long post but I feel like we got a lot accomplished today by discussing different ideas for the project. If you have any problems, just let me know!

Thanks guys!

Yet another post...

Team LJ! I took a little journey to Salt Lake to grab a camera for our multimedia project. We are considering doing a movie interviewing various church leaders on their stance/doctrines towards Prop 8/Gay Marriage. We are good to go with that...now time to get filming!!

Coding sheets

I spent a couple hours on Monday working on the coding sheets. It didn't take me that long necessarily to figure out what was going on but I did some research on the issues of same-sex marriage within Christianity. There is some really interesting information out there on the topic. Since we wont have time to interview people of different religions I think we should still look for that information. We can go to the church's websites and search same-sex marriage and see what comes up as far as beliefs and everything else.

We also have to remember that we have to show how framing is involved in all of this so we have to think of a way to include that while also researching the topic.

I got the binder and sheet protectors and some paper for the coding sheets and cartoons. I'll print out the cartoons tomorrow and put those on the paper and we'll go over all the coding sheets in our meeting on Thursday. Speaking of that, I reserved the same room (143) in the library from 4:30-6:30 for us.

Braden and I are going to get together tomorrow around 9:30 to work on the project some more and talk about the different ideas he has come up with for the team cartoon.

Possible interview questions

Here are some questions I've thought about asking in our interviews. Let me know what you think-- is it too wordy, or too strict a format? Do you have any suggestions for other questions, or changes to be made to these questions? Of course, for organizations like the Baha'i Faith and the Islamic Center, we may have to modify the wording of the questions and replace the word "church" if needed.
  1. What is your church's full name?
  2. Is your church a part of a larger organization?
  3. When was your church established in Cache Valley?
  4. About how large is your congregation?
  5. What is your title?
  6. Does your church have any official teaching or stance regarding homosexuality?
  7. Does your church have any official teaching or stance regarding homosexual individuals?
  8. Do you ever mention homosexuality in a teaching context, such as a sermon to a congregation? How often?
  9. If so, how often (if ever) do you speak with your congregation about how to interact with homosexual individuals?
  10. If so, what is your council?
  11. Does your church have any policy about same-sex marriage? If so, on what grounds are your policies based?

Cold calling

I've been trying to contact various faiths in the valley, usually by phone.  I haven't made any appointments yet, but I'm going to try again tomorrow around noon. Here's generally what I said in emails and in messages left on voicemail.

Hi, my name is Steve Kent. I'm a Journalism and Communications major at USU. Currently, I'm working on an in-class group project about how the media cover homosexuality and religion. My group feels that the official policies and teachings of many religious faiths have not been adequately represented in the mainstream media. My group is recording video interviews with spokespersons for various faiths in our community. Could we meet sometime this week and interview you for about half an hour on your church's policy regarding homosexuality? We are usually available any time after 6 o'clock in the evening, but if another time works better for you, we should be able to work it out. Thank you very much.

October 21 Meeting

Braden, Steve and I met in the library from 4:30-6:00 on Thursday. We went through the cartoons that each of us had previously found, chose the ones we liked best and then found the rest of the 15 that we needed. Before our meeting I had printed off the coding sheets so while we were choosing the cartoons, I wrote down the information for them on the sheet (everything on the top half). We also discussed what type of multi-media project we are going to do. If we are able to do what we want, I'm really excited for it. I think it will turn out great.

With the cartoon's we started leaning more towards the religious factor is same-sex marraige. Becuase there were so many cartoons we figured we had to narrow it somehow. Not all of the cartoons we chose have to deal with religion but we tried to get a good variety. For the multi-media project, we want to interview different religious leaders and ask what their churche's beliefs are on same-sex marraige. Steve is going to be working on getting ahold of different leaders. I'll be working on the coding sheets. Braden is going to be going home to get the video camera and thinking of different ideas for our own cartoon.

Clarification

So I emailed Dr. Cooper and asked if we needed to do more than just an editorial cartoon and this is what she said:
"You will also need some type of multi-media project or an essay to submit with your cartoon. The team that submitted t eh cartoon last year also submitted a power point presentation. Looking forward to seeing your team cartoon!"

so we'll discuss what we can do in addition to the cartoon. See you this afternoon!
