The 3rd cartoon is a satirical take on the recent comments made by Mormon Apostle President Packer. In the most recent General Conference the LDS church holds twice a year, President Packer was quoted saying, "Some suppose that they were preset and cannot overcome what they feel are inborn temptations toward the impure and unnatural. Not so! Paul promised that “God … will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”14 You can, if you will, break the habits and conquer an addiction and come away from that which is not worthy of any member of the Church...There are those today who not only tolerate but advocate voting to change laws that would legalize immorality, as if a vote would somehow alter the designs of God’s laws and nature. A law against nature would be impossible to enforce."
The cartoon is playing off the comments made and by illustrating it with a political "Obama-like" advertisement thinking by using this type of marketing might help those disagreeing with President Packer's words to change, agree, or simplistically understand the message. The LDS church believes those with homosexual tendencies have the ability and capacity to "change." But do they? That has been the argument that many, even within the LDS church, have been fighting over for the past while. Contention and frustrations have built up within churches and many Christians are turning against other Christians in the fight to understand if homosexuality and gay marriage truly is something to overcome or something to be embraced.
The 4th cartoon is poking the California ruling of gay marriage. As we all know the issue of gay marriage in California has been quite the hot button issue for the past couple of years. It was once accepted, then voted against, and now has the possibility of being overturned. The LA Times reported on August 5th 2010, "A federal judge declared California's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional Wednesday, saying that no legitimate state interest justified treating gay and lesbian couples differently from others and that "moral disapproval" was not enough to save the voter-passed Proposition 8....The jurist, a Republican appointee, cited extensive evidence from the trial to support his finding that there was not a rational basis for excluding gays and lesbians from marriage." Many believe gay marriage is immoral. Many believe that it underminds what has 'always been done.' There are many who believe that by accepting/allowing same sex marriage it might threaten or take away the sanctity of the institution of marriage. Whatever the argument is, it is alive and kicking. And this article takes a humorous stab at some of the arguments.
